(I think I may have missed notifications on some earlier cries for help due to missing the follow thing. When I pressed the windows sign and X to find the 64-bit system I also discovered - to my horror, no idea how that happened - that my Windows antivirus was de-activated! Presumably that explains the infection. I also ran the free Kaspersky Online Scanner: nothing found. I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes yesterday and it found 6 PUPs which it quarantined. I don't understand tech at all, so I'll leave the causation/correlation connundrum to you experts, however, another change was a newspaper I would read no longer allowed my adblocker (maybe unrelated). At night daily, I always run CCleaner and occasionally superantispyware. At the same time, there is considerable latency when opening new tabs or clicking on links: they are not opening as normal and then it freezes up. After a shutdown at night and morning start-up, wi-fi internet wouldn't automatically connect, I had to manually connect it. I noticed a couple of weird things concurrently. This has happened over the past couple of days only (that's when I've had an issue).
